Reunited alt-rock legends Pixies will be playing the Halifax Metro Centre this weekend.

Prospective is gained by taking a dramatic pause.

Much to the chagrin of fans, for a band this often means disbanding. Bands like The Police, The Sex Pistols, and The Beatles never recover. Sadly iconic groups, notably Led Zeppelin, succumb to tragedy. After drugs, booze and ham sandwiches, in-fighting is next to blame.

Pixies, performing Saturday at the Halifax Metro Centre, managed to bounce back from bickering.

“When you get older, you get wiser,” drummer David Lovering told me in an interview. “You’re more cognizant of your faults as you grow as a human being and become less destructive.”

Pixies, an alternative rock band birthed in Boston, called it quits in 1993, so they missed out on the benefits of shout-outs from groups like Nirvana.

“We didn’t know any better,” Lovering said. “We didn’t know where we were in terms of our stature as a band.”

Pixies have returned. In 2004, letting bygones be bygones, they reunited and happily picked up where they left off.

“We all feel very fortunate to be back to it and we’re touring as much as we can.”

The 2011 tour celebrates the 20th anniversary of their third album, Doolittle, that includes popular songs Monkey Gone To Heaven and Here Comes Your Man.

“The songs still stand the test of time and I hope we’re representing them justly,” Lovering said.

And in regards to keeping it civil on the road these days?

“We watch our Ps and Qs a lot more,” he said. “That’s one thing you learn how to do when you get older. Everything is good now.”

And no. I didn’t ask about his career in magic.
