The small combination pizza intimidated with its greasy visage, but it was just right.

Walking into Papa Sam’s in Kanata is like walking into an old-fashioned diner where you sense that all the people working in the place are friends or relatives of the owners. It has a homey, down-to-earth, unpretentious feel.

I had been warned that it’s a busy place so we arrived slightly before the onslaught of the lunch crowd. This was a good thing since the tables filled up fast after we arrived.

Although the menu runs the gamut from shawarmas to lasagna, I’d heard it was the pizza that draws the most rave reviews. I ordered the small combination, an old favourite, with mushrooms, pepperoni and green peppers.

On first glance, it looked greasy. But on first taste, it was juicy and dripping with goodness. The crust was perfectly golden and the cheese impeccably crisped. The sauce was flavourful and seasoned just right. It was perfect. Papa Sam, you make good pizza.
