From an eight by twelve-foot shed, the Cowtown Beef Shack serves delicious roasted AAA Angus beef from High River on baguettes.

Inspired by BBQ beef on a bun during the Calgary Stampede, the four basic beef sandwiches ($8) are juicy and full of flavour.

The "sandwich that made Calgary famous" had a just-right tangy sweet BBQ sauce with shredded beef and fresh onions. Add free hot banana peppers or horseradish sauce for an extra zing.

Sliced beef was piled high on the Cowtown cheesesteak with nice texture from onions, peppers. The beef and bun were extremely fresh, while a creamy cheddar sauce really made this something to come back for over and over again. Chips (three kinds) and drinks check in at two dollars.

Two people, including owner Brad Johnson, take orders and churn out the sandwiches with amazing speed and cheerfulness considering the close quarters. The shack has an oven and even an airplane-like bathroom.

The Cowtown Beef Shack is a takeout/drive-through affair since there are only picnic tables outside for eating. Catering is also available with advance notice.
