How can you go wrong with a complimentary mussel and salad bar?

I’m with out-of-town friends and they are suitably impressed. Five Fishermen is one of the city’s oldest restaurants — in an historic building with a lot of class. The service is impeccable.

The mussels are large and sweet, with choices of several sauces.

The salad bar includes a wide variety such as cucumber, olives, beans and potatoes.

The Grilled Tatamagouche Leg of Lamb (on a special menu for $40 including dessert) is tasty and tender and comes on a bed of herbed spaetzle (German noodles) with asparagus.

The Seafood Pie is on the same list of specials — a flaky crust over a delicious seafood assortment.

The Blackened Haddock ($37) tastes fresh and has a spicy kick, served with rice, asparagus and shrimp gumbo.

Five Fishermen Bouillabaisse ($36) is loaded with seafood, shrimp, scallops, haddock and halibut, plus a few potatoes and carrots. The sauce is rich and flavourful.

The famous Quebec specialty, Pudding Chomeur, is our favourite dessert, and, oh, so sweet.
What a meal.
