J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother)
Rating:
***

There’s a lot of buzz around J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother), and why not?

Its writer-director-star, Xavier Dolan, was all of 19 when he submitted it to Cannes.

Dolan stars as a Montreal teen whose relationship with his mother (the superb Ann Dorval) redefines “troubled” — the young hyphenate a natural in front of the camera and a little over-excited behind it.

There are some great stand-alone scenes here, but for all of its raw emotion and stylistic brio, the film never quite coheres.
