Julie Doiron
Album: I Can Wonder What you Did With Your Day
Label: Endearing Records/Fontana North
Rating: ***
Julie Doiron returns to her electric roots with ex-Eric’s Trip bandmate Rick White handling bass and production duties while Fred Squire (Calm Down It’s Monday) handles drums. Heavily distorted electric guitar and bass bring a sense of foreboding to Doiron’s strangely upbeat lyrics and childlike melodies, especially on standout tracks like Spill Yer Lungs, Heavy Snow and Consolation Prize. Yet when left to herself like on opening track, The Life of Dreams, or the closer, Glad To Be Alive, Doiron’s minimalism is simply silly. Minimalism shouldn’t necessarily be equated with art. Sometimes its just childlike.
