It’s an interesting idea, you have to give it that. Based on the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda, Silent House follows a moody young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) as she’s haunted and terrorized in a country house she, her father and her uncle are renovating before selling. And when I say “follows,” I mean it literally: Silent House is presented in real time, as one continuous take, which can be interesting except for those moments when Olsen has to wait while the cameraman gets out of her way on the stairs.
The film uses its main device to good effect in for the first half of its 88-minute running time, but as the tension continues to ratchet up and clues about what exactly the hell is going on here emerge, the whole thing starts to unravel.
