I have nothing but respect for the array of “healthier options” bistros that open almost every week in this city. I savour locally-grown, organic duck as much as the next guy.

However, some places – open for decades – have refused any trendy food movements and stick to what they do best.

One of these places is Back Home, which makes a mean platter of fish and chips.

The Family Platter ($33.95) includes the token side bowl of coleslaw, a mountain of fries (not chips), and a stack of battered haddock.

The moist white fish inside its crisp shell, with a swipe of tartar sauce, was all I needed. I crunched happily on deep-fried fare with my lemonade ($1.50) by my side.

The lunch menu is light and quickly made, and Back Home’s location is convenient to several streams of traffic.

With everything going for it, I figure Back Home can stick to what it does best.
