With the Maple Leafs a little beyond the halfway point of the regular season, there’s no better time to assign them mid-term grades. (OK, the ideal time would’ve been after 41 games, but you know what schedules are like.)
Forwards
Phil Kessel: Has done all that was asked of him and then some. GRADE: A-
Joffrey Lupul: Management loves him. Surprise of the year. GRADE: A+
Tyler Bozak: Filled in admirably on top two lines, but not long-term solution. GRADE: B-
Tim Connolly: Missed time with injuries, but when healthy, a valuable addition. GRADE: B+
Mikhail Grabovski: On same points pace as last year, with fewer offensive opportunities. Very valuable. GRADE: B+
Nikolai Kulemin: Only five goals so far after 30 last year, but a hard worker. GRADE: C+
Matthew Lombardi: Hasn’t been healthy for entire season, but speed, experience helps. GRADE: B-
Mike Brown: Gritty worker bee adds edge to lineup when healthy. GRADE: C-
David Steckel: Faceoff specialist has chipped in with seven goals. GRADE: A-
Jay Rosehill: Enforcer has only appeared in 16 games; a non-factor. GRADE: C-
Nazem Kadri: Youngster spent most of year in AHL; shows flashes of talent, but still needs more consistency. GRADE: B-
Joey Crabb: Grinder gives third and fourth lines a boost with physical play. GRADE: B
Darryl Boyce: After recall from Marlies, has been a key plugger. GRADE: B+
Colby Armstrong: Hard-luck guy can’t stay healthy. GRADE: INCOMPLETE
Defencemen
Dion Phaneuf: Captain has been Leafs’ best defenceman, sets tone for team. GRADE: A
Luke Schenn: Has lost his spot as defence corps’ golden child. Could be traded. GRADE: C
Mike Komisarek: Veteran has played best hockey since joining Leafs, but still not consistent enough. GRADE: C
Jake Gardiner: Rookie shocked everyone by making team out of training camp, but still has decent-size learning curve ahead. GRADE: B-
Cody Franson: Started disastrously, but earned and kept a spot with smart two-way play. GRADE: B-
John-Michael Liles: Before he suffered a concussion, was up there with Phaneuf as one of team’s top blue-liners. GRADE: B+
Carl Gunnarsson: Under-rated Swede has better all-around game than first glance might suggest. GRADE: B+
Keith Aulie: Sophomore had job stolen by Gardiner, but earned it back through strong play with the Marlies. GRADE: B-
Goaltenders
James Reimer: Started season well but following a lengthy recovery from a concussion, hasn’t looked like a No. 1. GRADE: C
Jonas Gustavsson: Early inconsistency nearly earned him a ticket to the AHL, but he’s rebounded to claim starting job. For now, at least. GRADE: B-
