They like us, they really like us. “They” being YouTube users and “us” being the more creative Canadians who raked in millions of views this year.
If we ignore the first-place Rebecca Black juggernaut — Sorry? You’ve been doing that since the summer? Well, OK then — the reigning world champ of YouTube is the tortured inner monologue featured in Ultimate Dog Tease from Halifax’s Andrew Grantham, who has since anchored his success in the Talking Animals channel. The original anguished pup rang up more than 74 million views and earned itself a sly mention on Showtime’s new series, Homeland.
Nipping at the German Shepherd’s heels in Canada’s zeitgeist is Winnipeg’s Maria Aragon, who rode a stripped-down version of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way to a cool 45 million views, a stage appearance with the Lady herself and a new gig in a Gap commercial. Aragon also finished a healthy eighth place on the global chart.
And as long as we’re handing out the hardware, we should note that Canadians were also the year’s largest per-capita consumers of YouTube, which sort of flies in the face of our shameful Google searching.
In total, there were more than one trillion total views on YouTube this year and 48 hours of content were uploaded every minute. All of which, we are sure, is of the utmost cultural relevance.
