Doctors in Poland are trying to battle the bulge by targeting the brain.
As a last resort treatment for those who can’t shed pounds the old-fashioned way, Polish doctors are helping the morbidly obese slim down with brain surgery.
Using deep brain stimulation, doctors implant a neurostimulator that sends a continual electrical pulse to the patient’s brain. The pulses activate pathways in the brain that control hunger, potentially preventing morbidly obese patients from overeating.
While the procedure is still considered experimental, similar surgeries have been used around the world to help reduce tremors in Parkinson’s patients. If proven successful, doctors hope to use the treatment for a wider range of health conditions.
