Tomes have been written about what components make a stellar grilled cheese sandwich, and subsequently, where to find the best in the city.
The writing can cease now, thanks to the arrival of Cheesewerks, where sandwiches are expertly made-to-order using only local ingredients.
Canadian Swiss cheese blankets moist, thick slabs of pastrami, pickled red cabbage and grainy mustard.
Enveloped by grilled whole-grain rye, this ensures the New York’s ($9.50) place as an instant champion, though not an inexpensive one.
The Beijing ($10) is a knockout, albeit unusual. Small bits of BBQ pork slathered with hoisin, tangle with slivered green onions and a gooey layer of asiago.
On the matching green onion potato bread, it’s stunning, but mints are a necessity after this one.
Hand-crafted sodas ($3) and bagged potato chips ($1.25) round out the meal.
It might not be the healthiest thing on the planet, but it’s sure damn tasty.
