Dundas Street West, near Dufferin, is hopping with new restaurants.
So it’s no wonder that the crowd here at The Federal is a bunch of cool neighbourhood folk. I spot that well-known chef from across the way and behind me is a filmmaker well known for his probing docs.
Despite people-watching opportunities, the food at The Federal is the real draw.
The Ploughman’s Lunch ($12) features a daily selection of meat, cheese, pickle and is served with warm bread.
Today’s luscious fresh smoked trout, aged cheddar, sliced pear, caper berries and branston pickle is perfectly balanced.
The Cubano ($12) is a dreamy sandwich you’ll still be thinking about days later. It’s filled with roast pork, ham, cheddar, creamy avocado, dijon, red onion and pickle. At its side is salad and potato rösti.
Adding a Fresh Squeezed Juice ($3), and if you still have room, a fresh Scone ($3.50) is recommended.
You might just have to make a second trip for that. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.
