Spencer West scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro on his hands but said completing the trek between Edmonton and Calgary was an even greater challenge.

The legless man completed the Free The Children campaign We Walk 4Water Thursday at Mountain Park School in southeast Calgary with dozens of kids clapping and chanting his name as he crossed the finish line.

“I’m tired, my arms are killing me, I’m ready for a few days of sleep, but that last little bit to have those kids cheering for us brought up our energy again,” he said.

West used his hands and wheelchair to travel 300 kilometres in 11 days with his two best friends David Johnson and Alex Meers by his side. The group scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro last summer with the same intention of raising awareness and funds for clean water in Africa.

Johnson said he and Meers were once again inspired by West and humbled by the support they received at communities and schools across Alberta.

“Watching him do this and watching him stop and talk to every student along the way…there’s no limits to what he can do,” he said.

Grade 8 students Alison Dippenaar and Halle Gittens have been anticipating West’s arrival at their school since February and were thrilled to see him finally finish.

“It really shows how he can put himself out there and stand up for what he believes in,” said Gittens.

The intention of the campaign is to provide 100,000 people with clean water for life, according to West, with a $25 donation providing clean water for one person.

“We wanted to show that through support, anything is possible. I was told I would never walk or be a functioning member of society but not only did we climb the largest mountain in Africa, but we just walked 300 km across the province,” said West.

“If I can do that, what more can we all do for each other, the local community and the global community to make the world a better place?”

We Walk 4Water highlights:

Along the walk, West was joined by Survivor winner Ethan Zohn, actor J.R. Martinez and musician Nelly Furtado, to name a few.

To date, Free The Children has raised enough money to provide clean water for 80,000 people.

When someone showcases inappropriate behaviour, especially in a workplace setting, it can create a negative work atmosphere in which other co-workers feel uninterested to do their work and even customers don’t want to deal with that particular business. Whether the need for the confrontation arises in a work or personal setting, here are handy tips on how you should go about confronting that certain someone:

Use your personal power

This is simply the influence that you have on your peers. While we all have positional power, personal power is something we develop through rapport. If you are to confront someone, it can make the process a lot easier if you have a good working relationship and mutual understanding with that person.

What to confront

If you are confronted by someone, you will probably take it personally. So when you are confronting, don’t point your finger at the individual, but rather talk about how the way they are behaving needs to change. Remember the saying: “It’s not what you’re saying, but how you’re saying it.”

Be objective

Don’t let your emotions get in the way — stay both morally and emotionally objective.

Stay focused on the issue at hand

Always remain focused on the initial issue, and confront tihe person’s behaviour.

Consistency

Try to be consistent in your approach and in what you do and say.

Laugh it up

It can be a very good idea to employ humour.

This shows you are human and that you can make light of the situation.

It’s also a good way of cutting through the emotional tension.

Be pre-emptive

Always attempt to resolve problems before they actually occur or deal with it early on to prevent any escalations.

In our day-to-day lives, we are all faced with various conflicts that we must deal with.

In the context of the school environment, you might have a falling out with someone in your class project group, or perhaps even with your teacher. Whatever the conflict may be, it must be resolved as soon as possible in a mature and effective manner so that the problem does not escalate.

Depending on the situation you are in, the other parties involved and what their needs and wants are, as well as where each party stands on the power spectrum and the urgency of the situation, there are a number of different handy conflict-resolution strategies that can be used to effectively mitigate and resolve the problem.

Read below to find out more about five common conflict resolution strategies that might be of use to you.

Competitive

This type of conflict-resolution strategy can be very useful if you are 100 per cent unyielding and unwilling to give in to the other party. But keep in mind that this strategy should only be used when you have a firm stand in the situation and you come from a position of power. Specifically, this strategy will be the most useful in times of emergency, where a decision regarding the most appropriate actions to be taken is required right away.

Collaborative

Collaborative conflict resolution comes in handy when you need to work together to meet the needs of all parties involved. In this type of conflict situation, a very high level of importance is placed on effective co-operation. Use this approach when you know you will be (or are likely to be) dealing with that party again.

Compromise

This type of conflict-resolution strategy should be used when you truly want to ensure that the solution will be satisfactory for all involved. In this scenario, each party involved must be willing to give in on some demands to come to the end solution.

Accommodate

This type of conflict-resolution strategy should be used when you are willing to meet the needs of others, but at your own cost. This strategy is not the overly-assertive type, but rather a more co-operative approach. Here, a very high level of importance is placed on achieving peace rather than winning.

Avoidance

This type of conflict-resolution strategy should be used when you simply want to avoid the conflict altogether.

This is a good approach to use when you are just about at the end of your dealing with that party and will not have to deal with them again. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to simply keep your cool and avoid any problems altogether.

BOSTON – The Leafs’ exit from the playoffs was another 18-wheeler going right off a cliff. Sudden, shocking and final.

Up 4-1 over the Boston Bruins nine minutes into the third period of Game 7 Monday night, Toronto seemed destined to add to its history with a third straight win to seal a comeback from a 3-1 deficit in the series. That hadn’t happened for the franchise since the 1942 Stanley Cup final against the Detroit Red Wings.

But with a snarling Milan Lucic leading the way back for Boston, a stirring series comeback turned into total collapse.

Boston reeled off three straight goals — including two with Tuukka Rask off for the extra attacker — to tie the game at 4-4. Then Patrice Bergeron scored at 6:05 of overtime to cap a miraculous 5-4 recovery for a Bruins team that seemed to be on life support.

“They had us on the ropes,” said a relieved Boston coach Claude Julien. “We’re not going to sit here and lie.”

The Bruins are the first team in NHL history to win a Game 7 after trailing by three goals in the third period, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

“It just seemed like we ran out of gas,” said Toronto coach Randy Carlyle.

“Losing is tough and losing the way we did after a 4-1 lead, there’s nothing you can say to explain how and why it happened,” he added.

There will be a lengthy post-mortem once the emotions subside.

It had looked like two early goals by defenceman Cody Franson would be enough to propel Toronto into the next round. Up 2-1 to start the third period, Toronto got goals from Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri to pad the lead to 4-1 by 5:39.

Nathan Horton, set up by Lucic, got one back at 9:18. Then Lucic made it 4-3 at 18:38 and Bergeron tied it up at 19:09.

Cue an unlikely overtime and chalk up the miraculous recovery for Boston as the Bruins blitzed the Toronto goal. The Leafs could not clear the puck and Bergeron snapped home a shot.

“It’s one of the craziest ones I’ve been a part of,” said Bergeron, who was held to one goal in the first six games before collecting two goals and an assist in Game 7.

“That was unbelievable,” said Boston defenceman Johnny Boychuk. “That’s one thing you’re going to remember probably for the rest of your life, because it was such a comeback, that everybody probably thought that we were done and (it) showed what kind of character there is in this dressing room. Never say die, more or less.”

Toronto goalie James Reimer lay face down on the ice as the Bruins and their 17,565 yellow-and-black faithful celebrated.

“There’s no way to describe it,” he said of his emotions at the time. “Just an empty feeling really. It’s over and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Boston outshot the Leafs 35-28 including 17-6 in the third period and 5-2 in overtime.

The Toronto dressing room was like a morgue as players faced the media one by one.

“I don’t think any of us will be able to sleep too great tonight,” said Kadri, his face a mask of pain. “We understand that we kind of gave it away a little bit.”

Reimer called it one of “definitely the top five lows of your life.”

“I don’t know what happened to us — 4-1, you can’t lose that game,” said Kessel.

Captain Dion Phaneuf seemed in shock.

“It’s extremely tough to put into words,” he said slowly. “We had a team down and out and we just let them take over the game and climb out of a hole that they never should have came back from.”

Phaneuf offered his respect to the Bruins, but still seemed unable to comprehend what had just happened.

The Bruins advance to play the New York Rangers, who blanked Washington 5-0 in another Game 7.

It marked the first time the Bruins have come back from a three-goal deficit in a playoff game since April 11, 1990, when they trailed the Hartford Whalers by a 5-2 score in the third period but went on to win 6-5.

Carlyle reserved judgment on the officiating, but seemed to suggest Toronto was owed some calls. But he wasn’t complaining. And he tried to take some positives from what was a major-league kick in the gut.

“What we did is we proved that we can compete and this is a sharp learning curve for some of our younger players that this is what it’s going to take. And we did a lot of good things but we still didn’t find a way to close it out. So that’s the difference: one goal, one bounce, one bodycheck, one blocked shot could have made the difference for a win or a loss in the series. And we laid it out on the line and we played hard.

“The most disappointing part for me is we lost two games in our building and when you’re in the playoffs, very rarely can you afford to lose two in your building in a seven-game series. It makes the mountain that much more difficult to climb.”

The Bruins won Game 1 in Boston and Games 3 and 4 (in OT) in Toronto. The Leafs took Games 2 and 5 in Boston and Game 6 in Toronto.

Julien called it the most draining game he had been in and admitted he called a timeout in the second period in a bid to refocus the frustration on the Bruins bench.

Coming off a Game 6 loss at the Air Canada Centre the previous night, the Bruins had been forced to stay in Toronto overnight due to a plane malfunction. Nothing seemed to be going right for a team that had wobbled in the final days of the regular season, its schedule and psyche ruined by the ugly Boston Marathon bombings

Until the final minutes of Monday’s third period when the Bruins offered a sporting version of Boston Strong.

The capacity crowd, which had been disgruntled most of the night, partied as it waited for an overtime period that never seemed in the cards.

The fourth-seeded Bruins, who dug their own hole by failing to finish off the Leafs in Games 5 and 6, started well but soon found themselves short on defencemen, discipline and inspiration. Upset at the officiating as the game wore on, the Boston players seemed preoccupied with a jab here, a punch there.

It was as if they were more interested in getting even on the ice than the scoreboard.

Boston began to looked tired and dispirited. The opportunistic Leafs, in contrast, grew in stature and confidence.

Franson, who had four goals in 45 games during the regular season, upped his playoff points total to three goals and three assists in seven games. Kadri and Kessel both had a goal and an assist while linemate James van Riemsdyk had two assists

The last Toronto defenceman to score two goals in a playoff game was Tomas Kaberle on April 14, 2003, against Philadelphia.

Matt Bartkowski, profiting from a Franson turnover, opened the scoring for Boston.

Inside the TD Garden, a sellout of waved yellow towels. Back in Toronto, blue-and-white Leafs fans gathered at Maple Leaf Square.

After Game 6, Julien had talked of his Jekyll and Hyde team this season. The question facing Boston fans was which Bruins team would show up Monday.

The Bad Bruins — the team that exited the 2012 playoffs by losing Game 7 to Washington in 2012 and the one in 2010 that won three games against Philadelphia only to lose the next four. Or the Good Bruins — the team that won the Cup in 2011 by winning Game 7s against Montreal, Tampa Bay and Vancouver in the final.

He got both Monday.

“We know that we have to be better,” said Julien. “We can’t keep playing well in spurts and not so well in other spurts. There’s got to be some consistency.”

Julien asked for a 60-minute effort and the Bruins came out bristling. David Krejci’s line had three shots on goal in the first shift, including a two-on-one on Reimer.

Both team had injury issues.

Fifth-seeded Toronto was without injured centre Tyler Bozak (upper body) while Boston had problems on the blue-line with Andrew Ference and Wade Redden (undisclosed) both out.

Toronto’s Joe Colborne played for the second night in a row while Dougie Hamilton and Bartkowski filled in on the Bruins blue-line. Defenceman Dennis Seidenberg dressed but only saw 37 seconds ice time on two shifts in the first period after an apparent injury.

That left Boston with five defenceman, two of whom had seen limited NHL action.

Franson scored two and set up one — for the opposition.

His ill-advised pass between his legs from the boards inside the Toronto blue-line. It went straight to Bartkowski who skated in from the point and ripped a wrist shot past Reimer.

The fans started chanting Reimer, Reimer in derision. They should have been thanking Franson.

But the defenceman redeemed himself with two straight goals to give Toronto the lead.

The Bruins’ frustration was exemplified in the second period when Lucic, reacting to an unnoticed slash from Phaneuf as the Toronto captain was on his butt behind the goal, was penalized for roughing. Lupul then knocked Rask’s mask off with his knee in a goalmouth collision, enraging Chara.

As a franchise, the Bruins are now 13-11 in Game 7s (12-7 on home ice) compared to 12-10 for Toronto (5-9 on the road).

Going into the series decider, Boston had outscored the Leafs 17-14 and outshot them 238-206. Toronto had outhit the Bruins 304-254.

The Boston win tied the all-time playoff ledger between the two teams at 34 wins apiece with one tie.

The shocking finale leaves a sour taste in the mouth of a Toronto team that has surprised many under Carlyle, who succeeded the fired Ron Wilson in March 2012.

The Leafs were in freefall at the time, mired in a 1-9-1 slide.

“I’ve never had a team fall off a cliff like this before, I’ve had dips, slumps, rough patches, but this is akin to an 18-wheeler going right off a cliff, I don’t know what happened,” then GM Brian Burke said at the time.

While Leafs fans will have months to go over this wreckage, Julien offered some kind words for the Leafs.

“I saw a team grow …. As an opposing team coach, I saw that team get better and better. We’re glad we got rid of them because they kept getting better.”

Asked how he would describe the game to someone who had missed it, Boychuk offered up: “Too bad for them.”

BOSTON – Stranded in Toronto because of a plane malfunction, the Boston Bruins suddenly found themselves in need of a place to eat late Sunday.

Canyon Creek Restaurant, a steak house near Pearson International Airport, came through.

“They were super accommodating for us,” said Bruins forward Chris Kelly. “I’m sure they got called last-minute and 30 or 40 big men come in with big appetites and asked to be served. That was awesome of them to go out of their way. I’m sure they were, if not closed, pretty close to closing. I’m sure the staff, the last thing they want to see is 30 guys coming in five minutes before they were supposed to go home.

“That was really nice of them.”

When team officials discovered after the Sunday night game at the Air Canada Centre that they would have to stay overnight, they found accommodations and then started dialling to locate a place where they could feed the team.

The Bruins ended up staying at a hotel near the airport and flew out in the morning in advance of Monday night’s deciding game at TD Garden.

The team gave the restaurant four tickets to Game 7 as a thank you, with a Bruins fan among the staff said to be heading down with friends to take in the contest.

Forward Shawn Thornton said the extra night in Toronto might have helped him get more rest than at home.

“I didn’t have my dogs kicking me in my back in the middle of the night,” he said.

“I feel pretty good,” he added.

What kid doesn’t love to swim, dance or play soccer, basketball, baseball or hockey? Not only are those activities fun, but research also shows that physical activity and access to sports for children leads to increased self esteem, strong leadership skills and improved school performance.

The reality is that one in three Canadian families can’t afford to enrol their sons and daughters in sport and recreational programs. That’s where Canadian Tire Jumpstart comes in. The national charitable program is making a real difference in the lives of young kids from age four to 18, and its annual May Red Ball Campaign contributes to those efforts. The campaign’s slogan, “Together we can help all kids play,” couldn’t be more apt.

In return for a $2 donation at any Canadian Tire Retail, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Mark’s or Canadian Tire Gas+ store, customers will receive a mini red volleyball or soccer ball throughout May. One hundred per cent of donations go directly to help deserving kids in each store’s community participate in organized sport and recreation.

“We’re giving children the chance to learn life skills, create lasting friendships and fulfill their dreams. That’s the power of sport.” – Johnny Misley, the President of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities

Since Canadian Tire Jumpstart launched in 2005, it has helped more than 570,000 (and counting) kids take part in 73 different activities. “Our vision is more than getting children involved in sports and recreation—it’s to have a country where all kids have a chance to fulfill their dreams,” says Johnny Misley, the President of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities.

Jumpstart is unique in its ability to work in every community across Canada, with 332 local chapters built on the support from volunteers. These chapters work closely with more than 2,600 community partners to identify families with financial needs whose children would benefit from the programs. Jumpstart Ambassador and Olympic gold medalist Rosie MacLennan explains, “there are so many benefits to participating in sports, from gaining social skills to building great friendships. All kids should have this opportunity, which is why I believe in the power of Jumpstart.”

This year Jumpstart is proud to welcome Sport Chek and Atmosphere stores, to the family. Since these two banners came on board in January, they have raised more than $550,000 alone. Also, again this year we have support from a partner beyond the enterprise family Pita Pit who will also be offering Jumpstart red balls in exchange for a $2 donation.

“We’re giving children the chance to learn life skills, create lasting friendships and fulfill their dreams,” says Misley. “That’s the power of sport.”

Calvin Chen can attest firsthand to the power of sport in helping foster youth leadership. Earlier this year, the Grade 11 Mary Ward Catholic Secondary School student was able to get skates, a helmet and lessons at Scarborough’s McGregor Park Arena rink through the Toronto Sport Leadership’s Learn to Skate program. Then he paid it forward.

“I enjoyed it so much that I became a March Break skating instructor for the City of Markham,” says Calvin. “This has had such a positive impact on my life. And it’s all thanks to Canadian Tire Jumpstart!”

Julie Das is the Toronto Sport Leadership Program’s community recreation programmer. “When I met with the 14 students at Canadian Tire to help size them for skates and helmets, I realized the true significance of Jumpstart,” says Das. “Seeing their huge smiles will stay with me for a long time.”

Other Canadian Tire stores in the GTA are partnering with Jumpstart to help kids lead active lifestyles. The “Stockyards” store at St. Clair and Keele in West Toronto is one of them. “We’ve helped thousands of kids in the community through Jumpstart play hockey and baseball who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it,” says Associate Dealer Tim Tallon.
