It’s been three weeks now. General update?
I am ready to be out of this car now. I went through this weird sense of, “I got through it and I’m in a routine,” and I was optimistic and enjoying myself — and that’s almost completely gone now. The true absurdity of what I’ve done is dawning on me.
You said last week you were suffering from road rage. How are you dealing with this?
I met with a clinical psychologist. He specializes in rage issues. His stance is that road rage is not in and of itself a problem, but it just exacerbates existing conditions. So if you go into a car upset you are much more likely to be triggered during the ride. So he gave me some tips on calming down and having a very Zen-like approach to driving.
What cool stuff have you been up to?
I raced a bike from the Evergreen Brickworks to downtown, and he beat me. Not by much, about 30 seconds. We did it at 8:30 in the morning trying to use realistic traffic conditions but I was lucky because for some reason there was no one on the DVP. This week I am racing someone on a GO train from, I think, Vaughan. She’s going to be on a train and I’ll be in traffic — so that might be a little more one-sided.
What are you doing for exercise?
I was going for a run in the mornings, I know I should more often, but it’s really hard to motivate yourself to get up and go for a run after a five-hour, incredibly uncomfortable sleep in a car. I did car yoga this week. (The instructor) taught me a number of things. You’re limited to what you can do in a car — downward dog is kind of out of the question — but there is a lot of upper-body stretching and core stuff you can do, and breathing, which is key.
Any run-ins with nature?
I woke up one day with a raccoon on the hood of the car looking in at me. And then he saw that I was awake, so he started to slowly back off the hood and slid off the car. Then he slowly crawled up a post in front of the car … he basically thought I was a T-Rex and that if he moved slowly enough I wouldn’t eat him.
