The average Torontonian spends 80 minutes a day commuting in their car. That adds up to about a month out of every year.

To drive the point home, Evergreen has enlisted 22-year-old Tanner Zurkoski to live in a Honda Insight — day and night — for four weeks straight

As Tanner Zurkosi will tell you, he’s a little impulsive. This spring, he bought a mandolin on a whim, took up hunting for a day, and toured Vancouver Island on a motorcycle.

So when he saw that Evergreen was looking for someone to spend a month in a car during their MOVE Transportation Expo, he couldn’t resist.

“It seemed so ridiculous that I thought I had to apply to it,” said the 22-year-old film student and professional sound recorder. “So I did.”

To his surprise, the folks at Evergreen picked him to spend 24 hours a day in a Honda Insight for the next month. From the seat of his hybrid, he will Tweet, talk and hold interviews about environmentalism and sustainability.

The feat is meant to highlight the cringe-worthy statistic that Torontonians spend, on average, a month each year commuting in their car.

Although Zurkoski agrees with the idea, he is a little concerned about his comfort over the next month.

At 6’3”, most hybrids “fit me like a metal sweater,” he says.

However, this won’t be the first time he’s lived in a vehicle.

Just as he was about to enter the fifth grade, Zurkoski’s mother asked him if he wanted to go to school or travel the U.S. and Canada for a year. He, of course, chose the latter. So they left their Vancouver Island home behind and spent the next 12 months drifting from state to province in an old ski bus.

Perhaps his impulsive streak is inherited.
